How to get contracted with Community Health Group as a doula

Community Health Group is the San Diego–based, nonprofit Medi-Cal plan. It covers doula care, but its online contract applications don’t include doulas, and it doesn’t publish doula contracting steps. Here’s how to reach the right team, based on what CHG and DHCS publish.

Updated October 5, 2026

Community Health Group doesn’t publish its doula contracting steps (we checked its provider pages on October 5, 2026). The steps below are the general process plus what Community Health Group does publish. Confirm the details with its provider team before you rely on them.

Enroll with Medi-Cal (PAVE), as DHCS requires
  1. Enroll with Medi-Cal

DHCS’s rule for every plan: enroll through PAVE, meet the plan’s credentialing requirements, and sign its contract. Start with how to become a Medi-Cal doula.

  2. Email CHG’s contracting department directly

CHG’s Join Our Network page says it only accepts contract applications from the specialties it lists, with physical locations in San Diego County, and doulas weren’t among them when we checked. Don’t read that as “not accepting doulas”: DHCS lists CHG’s contracting department, contractingdepartmentemaildistributiongroup@chgsd.com, as its doula contracting and onboarding contact. Email them and ask:

    • Whether CHG is contracting with doulas now, and which application to use.
    • What credentialing documents and liability insurance it requires.
    • How long credentialing and contracting take.

CHG’s Provider Services specialists can also help: 1-619-240-8933 or ooaprov@chgsd.com.

  3. Know CHG’s recommendation rule and billing contact

CHG’s member page says doula services require a written recommendation from a physician or other licensed practitioner, covering the standard package, and an additional recommendation for up to nine more postpartum visits. (DHCS’s statewide standing recommendation satisfies the first recommendation under Medi-Cal’s rules.) Bill with Medi-Cal’s doula codes, diagnosis pairings and modifier XP; see our billing cheat sheet.

DHCS lists calvar@chgsd.com for doula billing, claims and payment at CHG.

How many Community Health Group members use doulas

Very few, at least early on. DHCS’s July 2025 report on the doula benefit put Community Health Group among the plans with fewer than 11 members using doula services between January 2023 and June 2024 (DHCS suppresses smaller counts for privacy).
